Student Testimonial

This research experience changed the course of my academic life. Because of the stipend, I was able to take time off work to travel for fieldwork, attend conferences, and commit the hours needed to complete my project. I gained skills in data analysis, programming, scientific writing, and field methods – skills I never would have developed without this support. Presenting my work at a professional conference helped me build confidence, network with researchers, and see myself as a scientist. I’m incredibly grateful for the funding that made this possible.

Undergraduate research transforms students into scientists, scholars, and innovators. It gives them the chance to design studies, conduct fieldwork, present at conferences, and contribute new knowledge to their fields. However, these opportunities require time, travel, materials, and mentorship, and many students simply cannot participate and showcase their abilities without financial support.

Your donation allows our College to live our motto – Every Mariner. Every Time. It ensures that every student has the chance to pursue meaningful research, regardless of financial barriers.

Why Your Support is Needed

Undergraduate research is impactful, but it isn’t free. Students often face financial obstacles that limit their ability to participate fully, including:

Lost Wages from taking time off work

Many research projects require fieldwork, lab hours, conference travel, or weekend commitments. Students frequently have to reduce work hours or miss shifts entirely to complete their research.

Travel and conference expenses

Presenting at regional and national conferences is a transformative academic experience. However, travel, lodging, registration fees, and meals add up quickly.

Research materials and software

Projects often require field equipment, lab supplies, specialized software (e.g., ArcGIS, statistical programs), and printing and poster materials.

How much funding is needed?

Because each year brings a new set of student projects, the organization does not operate with a single fixed funding target. Instead, the financial need fluctuates based on the number of students conducting research, the types of projects proposed, required travel for fieldwork or conferences, costs of specialized equipment or software, and the number of students presenting at regional or national meetings.

Because student research is diverse spanning psychology, geology, biology, environmental science, and more, the needed funding required varies annually. Some years demand more travel support; others require more lab materials or software licenses. There is no fixed cost because each cohort’s research is unique.

Your donation – whether $25 or $2,500 – directly supports students by covering these evolving needs.

Every contribution helps ensure that no student has to choose between financial stability and academic opportunity.

Your Impact

When you donate, you are not just funding a project. You are:

  • opening doors for first-generation and low-income students
  • supporting hands-on learning that builds real-world skills
  • helping students publish research, present at conferences, and pursue graduate school
  • strengthening the future of science, scholarship, and innovation

Your generosity empowers students to pursue their passions and contribute meaningful research to their fields.
