Students to Showcase Cooking Skills for Local Food Bank

Students at the College of Coastal Georgia will show off their culinary skills and food knowledge at the 6th Annual CHEM 1100 Cook-Off to benefit America’s Second Harvest Food Bank. The cook-off will be held Wednesday, June 26, starting at 11:00 a.m. at the College’s Campus Center. The event is open to the public, who can sample students’ dishes.

Attendees at last year’s 5th Annual CHEM 1100 Coo-Off sample students dishes to judge their favorite.

For the cook-off, each student will create a dish using ingredients that utilize canned foods which are sometimes difficult to find a use for but are available from the America’s Second Harvest warehouse. Students are given three minutes to select ingredients from the bank for their recipe, and those ingredients have to make up 80 percent of their respective dishes. They will create healthy, easy-to-follow recipes with nutritional information. Paper copies for each recipe will be available for attendees to take and try at home.

Visitors will be able to taste the dishes and vote for their favorite with a donation of $1. All proceeds will be given to the local America’s Second Harvest Food Bank. Additional cash donations, non-perishable canned goods, and paper products will also be accepted.

The annual cook-off serves as a service-learning project for students’ Introductory Chemistry summer course, which is geared towards food science studies. Service-learning projects allow students to apply skills learned in the classroom in real-world situations and collaborate with local agencies. By partnering with America’s Second Harvest, students will reflect on the connection between food and chemistry, understand food scarcity, and the importance of addressing community needs.

The top three students who receive the most votes will be awarded with gift cards to the College bookstore.
