Brunswick, GA – In an announcement made earlier this week, the Corporation for National and Community Service included the College of Coastal Georgia in the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary general community service.
According to the notification received by Dr. Elizabeth Wurz, director of the College’s Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement, the Honor Roll “recognizes higher education institutions whose community service efforts achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities.” Selection represents the highest federal recognition that colleges and universities can receive for community service, service-learning and civic engagement.
In sharing the good news, Dr. Wurz thanked College administration for supporting the students, faculty members and community partners in their service-learning initiatives. “At the College of Coastal Georgia, Chairs, Deans, Vice Presidents, and Dr. Aloia contribute to service-learning opportunities that enhance students’ civic learning, academic enhancement, and personal growth while addressing a community need.”
A federal agency, the Corporation for National and Community Service was established in 1993 with the mission of improving lives, strengthening communities, and fostering civic engagement through service and volunteering. The agency is the nation’s largest grant maker for service and volunteering with core programs such as AmeriCorps and Senior Corps engaging more than 5 million Americans in service.
The honor roll highlights how colleges and universities help to strengthen communities by involving millions of college students in service-learning programs and volunteerism.
