Brunswick, GA – Dr. Frans B.M. de Waal, C.H. Candler Professor of Primate Behavior at Emory University and director of the Living Links Center for the Advanced Study of Ape and Human Evolution at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, will be the featured speaker at a campus presentation on Monday, October 27 at noon in the Stembler Theatre of the Campus Center. The event, which is free and open to the community, is jointly sponsored by the campus Psychology Club and the Golden Key International Honour Society.
Educated in the Netherlands, Dr. de Waal received his Ph.D. in Biology and Zoology from Utrecht University. He moved to the United States in 1981 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2004, becoming a Fellow 2008. He has been a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences since 1993. In 2007, Time magazine listed him as one of the World’s 100 Most Influential People Today and in 2011 he was named one of Discover magazine’s all-time Great Minds of Science.Since 2011 he has served as editor-in-chief of the journal Behaviour, a Brill scholarly publication.
He has been a featured essayist in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Nature and Scientific American as well as various scientific journals. His books include Our Inner Ape (Riverhead Books, 2005), Chimpanzee Politics (JHU Press, 2007), Primates and Philosophers (Princeton University Press, 2009), The Age of Empathy (Broadway Books, 2010) and The Bonobo and the Atheist (W.W. Norton & Company, 2014).
