Brunswick, GA – The third lecture in the College’s public series, Economics and Liberty at Coastal, will be held Monday, November 24 at 6:00 p.m. in the Jones Building, Room 102. The program is free and open to the public.
The speaker will be Dr. Derek K. Yonai, Director of the Center for Free Enterprise and an Associate Professor of Economics in the Barney Barnett School of Business and Free Enterprise at Florida Southern College. He is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Faith, Work and Economics.
“The focus of this stimulating series is the role of economics in a free society. We explore the inter-relationship between economics, freedom and liberty,” explained Dr. Skip Mounts, Dean of the School of Business and Public Affairs. ”The series should appeal to anyone with an appreciation for social responsibility, global awareness and engaged entrepreneurship.”
Dr. Yonai’s discussion topic will be Why Free Enterprise Should Be Part of a Business Education. He asks, “Why do the media and the public portray business people as criminals?”
Yonai contends that the current model of business education has led to over 40 years of business school graduates “who know how to do business but do not understand the inherent social nature of business. By failing to train the minds of business leaders by only training their hands, business leaders have forgotten that business is about people and human flourishing. As economic data illustrates, places with well-functioning free enterprise systems have higher income, lower levels of poverty, more employment, and more flourishing. Bringing free enterprise education back into business education will help provide the necessary philosophical foundation to help insure a more prosperous future.”
Dr. Yonai earned his B.A. in economics from the University of California at Irvine, his M.A. in economics and a Ph.D. from George Mason University, and graduated with honors from Whittier College School of Law. His research foci are in legal history, law and economics as well as religion and economics.
The Charles Koch Foundation in Arlington, VA, awarded the College a grant to produce the program.
