The brutal winds around Hattiesburg, Miss., couldn’t slow down the College of Coastal Georgia men’s golf team on March 14 at the Carey Collegiate Invitational.

The Mariners turned in a 284 in the final round, which coupled with a first-round 281, earned Coastal a seven- shot win over tournament host William Carey.

Paxton Shuman and Eamon Owen provided the lowest scores for Coastal, finishing second and third overall in the individual competition.

Shuman carded a 1-under 71 to finish at 6 under for the tournament, one shot behind medalist Colin Troxler of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Owen had the best round of any Mariner golfer in the final round, shooting a 3-under 69. He finished the tournament a shot behind Shuman at 5 under.

Lauri Hacklin’s 71 in the final round gave the Mariners three golfers under par for the tournament at 1 under. Seth Sanders rounded out the scoring with an even-par 144 for the tournament.

The victory is the second of the spring season for the Mariners, who return to the links in April at the Golfweek NAIA Invitational.

Off the course, Shuman was honored as the Southern States Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week on Tuesday.

Shuman finished 10th last week at the Sand Shark Invitational, second during a tri-match with Villanova and Swarthmore and won in Coastal’s match against St. Joseph’s on Jekyll Island.

TENNIS

More accolades came for CCGA athletes from the SSAC offices on Tuesday.

Tennis players Bautista Chiaradia and Daniella Caruso were named the Men’s Tennis and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week, respectively.

Chiaradia, a freshman from Argentina, went 5-0 last week including a 3-0 record in conference play.

Caruso, a senior from Venezuela, went 6-0 at No. 1 doubles and 2-1 in singles action for the Mariner women.
