Internationally Renowned Artist Sonia Grineva Donates Artwork to Huie-Wilcox Gallery

BRUNSWICK, GA – The College of Coastal Georgia recently received a new piece of artwork in the Huie-Wilcox Gallery. Capri Marina Picola, oil on canvas, by Sonia Grineva was added to the permanent collection. The 48″ by 32″ landscape captures Marina Picola located in Italy on the sunny South side of the island of Capri, sheltered from the wind by a steep wall of rock. Grivena considers Marina Picola one of the most beautiful in the world.

Capri Marina Picola is Grineva’s second piece in the collection.

“Sonia is one of the most exciting artists I have ever worked with. She lives a life of art by enjoying her travels and capturing on canvas the experience of new places she visits,” said Millie Huie Wilcox. “This piece truly captures her love for Capri, a place she resides part of the year, and her abilities as an artist. Her perspective, explosive colors, and her technical expertise are representative of her extensive training in Russia and New York.”

The Huie-Wilcox Gallery on the campus of the College of Coastal Georgia is located in the lobby of the Hargett Building, One Campus Drive, Brunswick. The gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The gallery will be closed during holidays, including the Friday following Thanksgiving and December 24-January 2. Gallery admission is free.

About the Huie-Wilcox Gallery:

The Huie-Wilcox Gallery, honoring the legacy of Mildred Nix Huie and Mildred Huie Wilcox in the Golden Isles, was unveiled in the lobby of the Hargett Building on November 1, 2011 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of the College. The gallery houses the permanent collection of the College of Coastal Georgia, Coastal Visions.

In celebration of the 2009 inauguration of Dr. Valerie Hepburn as the President of the College, local artists contributed their work to establish an exhibit. The original collection of thirty-two pieces, entitled Coastal Visions, reflected the beauty and wonder of our coastal region as well as the vision of the College of Coastal Georgia.

About Sonia Grineva:

Sonia Grineva was born in Moscow, Russia, and received her B.A. and M.F.A. degrees from the Stroganov Art Institute, Moscow’s leading art school, whose faculty has included such figures Kandinsky, Malevich and Rodchenko, among others.

Upon coming to the United States at the age of 20, she continued her studies at the National Academy of Design in Manhattan, where she was awarded a prestigious traveling scholarship granting her the opportunity to study in Florence, Italy at the British Institute.

Sonia has travelled extensively, and works on location in the tradition of many plein air artists. Her travels have taken her to many parts of the US, including New England, the South and California. She has also travelled widely in Europe and has made paintings of some of the continent’s most impressive landscapes and city scenes, including those in and around Venice, La Rochelle, Monte Carlo, Dieppe, and Prague.

In the past few years Sonia has spent a significant amount of time painting in Italy, and has created landscapes that range from the olive groves of Puglia to the snowcapped peaks of Alto Adige. She draws deep inspiration from Italian history and culture, as well as from the thousands of years of artistic expression that are present in the country’s architecture, paintings, sculpture and human landscapes.

Sonia has received many distinguished awards and recognitions for her work.

Ms. Grineva has gained an international reputation for her oil and watercolor landscapes and abstract paintings, and is well known and appreciated in New York for her Manhattan cityscapes. In addition, she is adept at a variety of mediums, including printmaking and sculpture. Her work can be seen in galleries in New York, New England, Washington and Georgia, Europe and in numerous private, public, and museum collections.

She maintains an art studio on Union Square in New York City.
