Deal wants core computer courses

Brunswick, GA – Three campus organizations have organized the 2nd annual 9/11 Day of Remembrance event and invite the public to join them in commemorating what has become a defining moment in the nation’s history. On Thursday, September 11, Veterans Academic Learning Opportunities and Resources (VALOR), the Psychology Club, and the students’ programming board, Overboard Entertainment, will host a series of programs on the Brunswick campus.

The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the yardarm flagpole of the Alaimo Plaza, between the Gould Library and the Nunnally Health and Science Building. Two moments of silence will be observed at the times the planes struck the Twin Towers of New York City in 2001: 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m.

During the afternoon, three local scholars will provide context for both the tragedy of 9/11 and the aftermath, according to Ben Harrell ‘15, president of the Psychology Club. The discussions will be held in the Stembler Theatre of the Campus Center. At 2 p.m., Dr. Don Mathews, Professor of Economics, School of Business and Public Affairs, will discuss the economic aftershocks of 9/11. At 3 p.m., Dr. Kimberly Kinsey Mannahan, faculty co-advisor of the Psychology Club and Assistant Professor of Psychology, Schools of Arts and Sciences, will present her research on religious fundamentalism and prejudice. At 4 p.m., Tony Wege, Professor of Political Science, School of Arts and Sciences, will present his research on Hezbollah and global terrorism.

Each presentation will be approximately 35 minutes in length, followed by interactive audience question-and-answer sessions.

The evening will conclude at 8 p.m. with a patriotic-themed coffee house event in the Lighthouse Bookstore, Campus Center.

The community is invited to attend and participate in all of the programs.
