Teaching the next generation of leaders is just one function of the faculty at the College of Coastal Georgia. Faculty remain engaged in the scholarship within their disciplines and continue to contribute to their field of study. To recognize this, the College will host a Coastal Scholars Showcase Thursday, February 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Southeast Georgia Conference Center, and Friday, February 8 from 9 a.m. to noon, also at the Conference Center.

The showcase, organized by the Faculty Development Committee and chaired by assistant professor Dr. Karen Lucas of the Department of Education and Teacher Preparation, gives faculty and staff an opportunity to present their scholarship—which includes research, creative expressions, published work, and new ideas—to colleagues, students, and community members. The goal is to serve as a resource for the community and to create a collaborative environment for faculty and staff to share experiences and develop plans for future scholarship.

The showcase will kick off Thursday evening with a screening of the documentary “The Wanderer” produced by Tyler Bagwell, associate professor of Speech Communications. The film tells the story of how, in 1858, Savannah-based slave-owner Charlie Lamar schemed to covertly transport enslaved Africans to Jekyll Island in the luxury yacht “Wanderer.” The community is invited to the screening, which will be followed by a discussion and a reception.

On Friday, the diversity of Coastal Georgia scholarship will be on full display at the showcase. There will be presentations, citation recognitions, a gallery walk featuring research posters and other creative work, and reflective discussions during which new ideas are shared for feedback from colleagues. Topics range from economics, anthropology, war, and environmental sustainability to community service, math, procrastination, literature, and generational differences.

“The Coastal Scholars Showcase is an opportunity to learn more about the academic excellence of the faculty at the College, where we believe in lifelong learning,” Lucas said. “Teaching is only half of what we do. An important part of being a four-year institution is engaging in scholarship. We are active scholars in our disciplines and are looking forward to sharing what we’ve been working on with our colleagues and community.”
