Brunswick, GA – The annual Fall Launch of a new academic year was held Tuesday, April 12. College President Greg Aloia convened faculty and staff from the Brunswick campus and the Camden Center in Thomas Auditorium, opening with the Pledge of Allegiance and recognition of military veterans now serving the College and the cause of higher education.

Throughout the morning, Dr. Aloia provided examples of faculty and staff engagement with students and entrepreneurship in creating opportunities for faculty development.

In his remarks, Dr. Aloia reiterated the continuing relevance of the College vision statement, referencing the definition of entrepreneurship developed by Professor Howard Stevenson of the Harvard Business School: “…entrepreneurship is the pursuit of opportunity beyond resources controlled.”

He noted an updated master plan with objectives extending through 2021 would be completed by August 2015, stressing that the plan would be “strategic, structural and sustainable.” Complete College Georgia initiatives would be integrated into the planning process, he affirmed, with several impacting recruitment and retention already being incorporated.

His list of College accomplishments for the past 12 months spanned items as diverse as improvements to athletic facilities and the addition of new club sports; upgrades to students’ study and leisure facilities; campus beautification projects; faculty and staff enrichment opportunities; and improved services and amenities at the Camden Center.

In addition to welcoming new faculty and staff members, the Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Lance Carluccio, was introduced and Dr. Elizabeth Wurz, Associate Professor of English, was announced as Interim Director of Service-Learning. Dr. Marci Culley and Cody Cocchi were recognized as the incoming chairs of Faculty Senate and Staff Assembly, respectively. Service awards were presented to faculty and staff, with Professor Tony Wege representing the newest faculty member to accrue 25 years in service to the College.

Phyllis Broadwell, Director of Human Resources & Auxiliary Relations, presented the Outstanding Staff Member of the Year award to Diana Leal, a research analyst in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.

Dr. Aloia lauded the 82% participation of faculty and staff in the campus campaign for the College Foundation last year, noting that no other school in the University System of Georgia could claim that level of faculty and staff support and exhorting them to top that record in the coming year.

Reiterating the “new normal” of Complete College Georgia, Dr. Aloia challenged faculty and staff to become engaged entrepreneurs themselves in pursuit of student retention, progression and timely graduation.
