Brunswick, Ga., Oct. 25, 2017 — On Friday, November 3 from 9 a.m. to noon, the College of Coastal Georgia will host the 3rd Annual Coastal Ecology Symposium in the Southeast Georgia Conference Center on its Brunswick campus.

The symposium connects Coastal Georgia’s students and faculty with scientists, coastal managers, and community members to share research results from personal and group studies. The Coastal Ecology program’s students have been exploring new ways to conserve Georgia’s 100-mile coastline and its naturally occurring resources. Students will showcase their undergraduate research and service-learning internships in coastal ecology and conservation.

The event will kick off with timely talks by a trio of guest speakers. Rachel Guy, Ph.D. candidate and research coordinator of the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve will explore the possibility of global climate change affecting local fisheries. Dr. Jay Brandes, professor at the University of Georgia’s Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, will present research on microplastics pollution and reduction strategies in Georgia’s coastal waters. Finally, Jan Mackinnon of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will provide an overview of the Georgia Coastal Management Program and how prospective students may find a place in their industry.

There will also be an information fair featuring exhibitors from public agencies, conservation NGOs, and academia, with opportunities for student and community engagement.

The event is free and open to the public; no registration is necessary. Visitors may park next to the Southeast Georgia Conference Center at 4th Street and Mariner Way. Details are available at www.ccga.edu/ces.
