The February 2015 issue of the Georgia Public Library Services News featured a story about STEM grants that included a partnership between the Marshes of Glynn Libraries and the College’s Department of Mathematics and campus Math and Engineering Club members. The local libraries are offering a summer robotics program to interest students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics and activities the libraries offer. According to the article, “Savings enable GPLS to award STEM grants, meet IMLS goals,” grant funding was used to purchase 14 LEGO Mindstorms robotics kits. College students in the Math and Engineering Club, under the direction of Dr. German Vargas, Chair of the Department of Mathematics, will assist in launching a robotics club for middle school and high school students. The article quotes Karen Larrick, the library system’s programming coordinator: “These student coaches will bring a skill and knowledge level to the program that the library staff alone cannot provide…The college students will be able to take on the role of mentors to the teens and set examples of how reading and doing well in school can help younger students achieve their life goals.”
