BRUNSWICK, Ga., Sept. 7, 2017 – Following the Governor’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Glynn and Camden counties in anticipation of Hurricane Irma, the College of Coastal Georgia has announced that it will be cancelling all classes beginning at 12:30 p.m. and closing the college at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, 9/7. The College will remain closed through Tuesday, 9/12.

The College is urging all students make their own arrangements in evacuating the college by 6 p.m. Thursday, 9/7 and will assist any remaining residential students in evacuating to member schools within the University System of Georgia.

“Our top priority is the safety of our students, faculty, and staff,” said Dr. Meg Amstutz, interim president of the College. “We made the decision to cancel classes midday on Thursday in order to allow adequate time for our students to travel home and time for the College to secure our facilities in Brunswick and Camden.”

This will be the second consecutive year for closing and evacuation due to hurricane threat at the College, with the most recent experience being its response to hurricane Matthew in October of 2016.

Interim President Meg Amstutz commented, “Our goal is to do everything in our power to make a difficult situation go as smoothly as possible,” said Amstutz. “We are leveraging our experience in this arena and doing all we can to protect the safety of our students, support the stability of our facilities, and prepare for classes to resume as soon as it is safe to do so.”

While the College is closed, the administration will remain in contact with students, faculty, and staff via continuous web communications, social media, emails, and text messages. In addition, Coastal Georgia’s website, CCGA.edu, will serve as a central hub for information and will be updated regularly.
