College Faculty and Staff to Showcase Scholarly Work for the Golden Isles Community
The 2nd annual Coastal Scholars Showcase will return this year to highlight the work of faculty and staff at the College of Coastal Georgia who have continued to contribute to and remain engaged in their fields of study. The showcase invites faculty, staff, students, and community members to not only see the work of participants but ask questions and provide feedback. The 2020 Coastal Scholars Showcase will be held Thursday, February 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on campus at the Southeast Georgia Conference Center, and Friday, February 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., also at the Conference Center.
The showcase is organized by the Faculty Development Committee, chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Karen Lucas of the Department of Education and Teacher Preparation. Lucas is excited to do the showcase again after getting positive feedback about last year’s showcase.
“Participants of last year’s showcase really enjoyed learning about what their colleagues are doing and it gave them the opportunity to create new partnerships. Community members, too, came to take in some of the scholarly works,” Lucas said.
The showcase allows faculty and staff to present their scholarly works—which include research, creative expressions, culinary arts, published works, and new ideas. The goal is to create a collaborative environment in which everyone can share and learn from each other’s experiences and grow ideas for future works.
Thursday evening, the showcase will begin with the panel discussion titled “The College’s Impact on the Golden Isles.” Within the last year, the College had an economic impact of $104 million in the area, was responsible for 1,214 jobs, including 861 off-campus jobs related to institutional spending. Panelists from across the college will present and answer questions about how their departments are contributing to the local area.
A reception catered by the College’s culinary arts program will follow Thursday night’s presentation and discussion. Attendees will have the opportunity to do a gallery walk of poster presentations on scholarly work and visual arts, which will also be on display Friday.
In addition to the poster gallery, there will be presentations and reflective discussions throughout the day on Friday. Topics will include such issues as the psychology of long-distance walking, social media, literature, economics, nursing, and service-learning. Attendees are encouraged to interact with presenters and provide feedback on their ideas.
“We hope that the community will learn and understand that the College of Coastal Georgia wants to be a resource for them,” Lucas said. “We are a rising four-year institution and have grown so much over the years. We have a lot to offer.”
