Brunswick, GA – Dr. Michael P. Morris, Assistant Professor of History, School of Arts and Sciences, has a second book hot off the press. George Galphin and the Transformation of the Georgia-South Carolina Backcountry was released in December 2014 by Lexington Books, an imprint of Rowman & Littlefield, as part of their “New Studies in Southern History” series.
According to the website https://rowman.com/ISBN/978-1-4985-0173-6, “The focus of this work is a reconstruction of the life and career of an Ulster-Scot fur trader, George Galphin (pronounced Golfin), who immigrated to South Carolina in the colonial period.” The description cites three impacts: Galphin’s support of “for profit” Indian trade, which shaped relations between frontier settlers and the native Americans; his development of Ulster-Scot communities located between British settlements and Indian frontiers; and his role as Patriot Indian Commissioner during the American Revolution, pivotal in keeping the southeastern tribes out of the war.
Dr. Morris, who received his Ph.D. from Auburn University, is also the author of The Bringing of Wonder: Trade and the Indians of the Southeast, 1700-1783, published by Praeger in April 1999.
