CCGA update: Mariners place 5th at NAIA Invite

The College of Coastal Georgia men’s golf team slid in at fifth place in the 17-team, three-round Golfweek NAIA Invitational.

The tournament concluded Monday with Keiser University claiming the top spot with 900 score overall. The Mariners were nine strokes back at 909.

Paxton Shuman continued his consistent season as the lowest-scoring Mariner. He tied for 10th on the individual leaderboard with a three-day score of 8-over 224. Three Mariners were clustered together on the leaderboard. Taylor Guilbeau tied for 23rd at 229, Lauri Hacklin tied for 26th with 230, and Eamon Owen tied for 32nd with 231. Seth Sanders added a three-day score of 234 to round out the tournament for the Mariners.

Southeastern led the tournament with a Round 1 score of 297, but the lowest-scoring day in the tournament was Round 2. Coastal tied Webber International with the second-lowest score of the round, 290, to remain within striking distance before the final round. Scores soared Monday when Coastal shot 317 to fall out of contention.

The tournament was the last tune-up before the Southern States Athletic Conference Championship begins April 16 in Montgomery, Ala.

The women’s team, which withdrew from the tournament due to several injured players, will play their conference tournament April 23 in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
