BRUNSWICK, GA, March 20, 2018—The College of Coastal Georgia has announced the schedule for its Coastal Scholars presentations for the Spring 2018 semester. Coastal Scholars is an annual series of academic lectures on a variety of topics and issues presented by College faculty and invited experts in the community. The presenting scholar delivers a 30-minute discourse followed by 10-15 minutes of audience questions and comments, resulting in lively dialogue.

“The purpose of the Coastal Scholars series is to bring people in the community and the faculty of the College of Coastal Georgia together,” said Professor of Economics Don Mathews. “We have terrific faculty at the College who are passionate about their fields of study. The Coastal Scholars series provides a forum for community members and faculty to converse about important and interesting ideas.”

Mathews took over leadership of the series following the retirement of Political Science Professor Carl Anthony Wege.

All Coastal Scholars presentations will be held in the Stembler Theatre in the Campus Center on Coastal Georgia’s Brunswick campus.

The series kicks off on Thursday, March 22 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. with a presentation titled “Joseph Conrad: Mariner and Novelist” by Dr. David Mulry, professor of English. In this presentation, Dr. Mulry will be looking closely at two examples of Conrad’s sea-fiction, “The End of the Tether” and “The Brute.” He will consider how the historical context of the stories, Conrad’s own experiences as a sailor and captain in the British Merchant Marine, and the easily overlooked textual details from the novella help the reader better understand each novel.

In addition to his role as a professor of English at the College of Coastal Georgia, Dr. Mulry is also the webmaster of the Joseph Conrad Society of America. He has published a number of articles on political fiction, gender and colonialism, and manuscript revision in Conrad’s works. His most recent articles examined the works “The End of the Tether” and “Heart of Darkness.” Dr. Mulry’s book Conrad Among the Anarchists, published in 2016 by Palgrave Macmillan, focuses on the inception of Conrad’s The Secret Agent and the act of terror upon which it was based. He is currently working on a book on Victorian terrorist fiction as well as a book on Conrad’s sea fiction.
