Non-Degree Seeking & Special Categories

Coastal Georgia welcomes applications from students who wish to take courses for personal or professional development, but do not wish to pursue a degree. The following students follow under these categories:

  • Transient Students: A transient student is a student who is currently enrolled in another college or university and takes courses temporarily at Coastal Georgia with the intention of transferring the course credit back to their home institution. Transient students are approved and admitted for one academic term at a time.
  • Career Certificate Programs: Coastal Georgia offers a variety of certificate programs. Many of these certificates are not associated with degrees, but are a prescribed program of study at the postsecondary educational level.
  • Non-Degree Seeking Students: Students attending the College for a limited number of classes who are not seeking a degree may be classified as Non-Degree. These students may enroll for a maximum of 12 semester credit hours and must enroll in courses that do not require a prerequisite unless they have met or have exempted the relevant prerequisite course(s).
  • Auditing Students: Auditing students are students who enroll but do not seek credit for courses they are observing. They are regarded as official visitors and may be limited to begin registering for courses three days prior to the start of each semester. Credit is not awarded for audit and grades are not received. Auditors pay the regular tuition and fees for enrollment.

At Coastal Georgia, we understand that every student’s academic path is unique, and we encourage you to connect with an admissions counselor in the Office of Admissions to assist you throughout the enrollment process. We are dedicated to the success of every student, every time, and we want to make sure you have a seamless transition to Coastal Georgia.

Transient Requirements & Documents

To gain acceptance as a transient student:

This is typically done through a Letter of Good Standing or Transient permission form from the home institution for the intended semester of attendance at the College of Coastal Georgia. This must include the semester to which they are applying and specific approval to enroll as a transient student.
  • The applicant must not be under suspension or expulsion from their home institution.
  • Any previous academic work presented must be satisfactory.

Additional Information:

  • Enrollment as a transient student is limited to one semester. Exceptions may be made by special permission of the Office of Admissions and with special approval of the institution from which the student comes.
  • Transient students desiring to continue as transfer students must re-apply through the Office of Admissions by the semester application and document deadline data, and satisfactorily complete the transfer requirements.
  • Transient students are not eligible for financial assistance (grants, loans, HOPE Scholarship, etc.) through the College of Coastal Georgia. Transient students must make financial assistance arrangements with their “home” institution.
  • Transient students may register any time after open registration begins; generally, a week after registration opens for a given term.

Career Certificate Requirements & Documents

There are two types of admissions to career certificate programs:

  • Those with a Core-based general education component allowing more than 12 semester hours of Core Curriculum coursework.
  • Those with non-Core general education components allowing 12 or fewer semester hours of Core Curriculum coursework.

Required Documents:

  • Graduate from an accredited high school and submit a high school transcript. Applicants must meet a minimum GPA of 2.0 and meet the beginning freshman RHSC criteria, or
  • Possess a state-issued high school equivalency certificate or diploma, or
  • Meet transfer admissions requirements.
Non-Degree Seeking Requirements & Documents

Requirements & Documents:

  • Submit your official high school transcript showing a graduation date OR an official score report from GED, HiSET, or TASC.
  • If you hold an associate (does not include applied science) or bachelor’s degree, send an official transcript from the degree-granting institution instead of your high school transcript or GED, HiSET, or TASC scores.

Additional Info:

  • Non-Degree Students are allowed to earn up to 12 semester hours. Students may not enroll in any course for which there is a learning support prerequisite unless they have been screened for and have exempted the relevant learning support course. Students are advised to check course prerequisites and descriptions carefully and to consult with an academic advisor prior to registering for courses.
  • Non-Degree Seeking Students are not eligible for financial aid and must wait until the first day of classes to register.
  • Post-associate or bachelor’s non-degree seeking students must have earned an associate degree (does not include applied science) or bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • You may audit a class for no academic credit if space is available in the course you would like to audit. You will not be required to take course exams.
Audit

If you are applying for admission solely to audit a course or courses, apply as a Non-Degree Seeking student. After you are accepted for admission and during the course registration period, you must inform the registrar and your course instructor that you intend to audit the course.

Once enrolled, you cannot change from audit status to credit status, nor can you receive retroactive academic credit. If you wish to receive academic credit, you must take the course again. Note that you will pay the regular course rate for tuition, fees and books.

Adult Learner/Non-Traditional Transfer Requirements

To gain regular admission, all Adult Learners/Non-Traditional Transfers must submit:

  • Official transcripts from all previous colleges or universities attended with at least 30 or more earned transferable credit hours.
  • Must be in good academic standing and eligible to continue or return to any previous institution attended. Students who are on academic probation or suspension from a previous school may be required to provide a written personal statement and may be requested to provide additional information. The student may also be subject to an interview by appropriate college personnel before being considered for admission to the College.

Students completing non-transferable associate degrees at regionally accredited institutions will be evaluated on an individual basis to determine their eligibility for admission. Students who have earned a career associate degree may apply for admission to a program leading to the baccalaureate degree according to the criteria for admission for the program. Students with an earned career associate degree will not be held to RHSC requirements.

Amendment 23: 62 or Older Program

Georgia Residents 62 years of age or older may utilize the Amendment 23 enrollment and tuition waiver pathway once admitted to the College as a Degree-Seeking or Non-Degree Seeking student. The Amendment 23 program allows Georgia residents over the age of 62 to enroll in state colleges or universities on a space-available basis, tuition free, except for supplies, laboratory, or shop fees.

To be eligible for enrollment under the Amendment 23 provision, applicants must:

  • Be residents of Georgia, 62 years of age or older at the time of registration, and shall present a birth certificate or other comparable written documentation of age to enable the institution to determine eligibility. Please note, students will be asked to complete an Amendment 23 waiver form after acceptance.

Degree-Seeking Amendment 23 Students:

If you are seeking a degree or course credit, you must first apply online and submit the $25 application fee and meet all requirements based on your classification (freshman, transfer, post-bac).

Non-Degree Seeking Amendment 23 Students:

If you are auditing as a 62+ student, apply online and submit the $25 application fee and have official transcripts sent from the last college attended.
