Registration for Spring 2017 term begins October 24

Fall semester is rapidly coming to a close but before students prepare for finals and the holiday season, Lead Academic Advisor Patricia Morris urges students to enroll in courses for next semester well before classes commence in January.

The reason being is simple: Students who register early can choose the classes they want. This proactive approach will propel them toward graduation. But if that’s not enough of a reason, think of it this way: The “early bird catches the worm” strategy could be a deciding factor in your course selection process as classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We know students today have busy schedules. If you register early, you get classes at the times you want and that fit your schedule,” Morris said.

As it so happens, students have just a short few weeks to start planning ahead for Spring term 2017. To ensure your placement in the courses contingent with your major, plan ahead, review your Degree Works and procure a slot with your academic advisor.

Students can register accordingly:

• Seniors (90+ hours), Veterans, Athletes — Monday, October 24

• Juniors (60+ hours) — Tuesday, October 25

• Sophomores (30+ hours) — Wednesday, October 26

• Open registration for all students — Thursday, October 27

“It’s all about being stress-free. Students and faculty get busy during finals. For many faculty advisors, finals week is often a busy time and most are off campus during winter break. Registering now alleviates the stress that goes along with not being sure you’ll get the classes you need,” Morris said.

All students must see their academic advisor before the date they can register in order to have their registration hold removed. If you are unsure who your advisor is, log on to Degree Works — the widget with the graduation cap on under “Applications” on myCCGA — to find your advisor’s name and contact information.

“Students can discuss concerns with their advisor who can then help them develop a schedule that might work better for them. It’s important to balance each semester’s coursework so students don’t feel overwhelmed,” she said.

Set up an appointment by contacting your advisor directly or signing up for a time slot. Most advisors post a sign-up sheet outside of their office doors, so check and see if one is available.

“Review your Degree Works and be ready to talk to your advisor about classes you need in your major,” she said.

Once the hold is removed, students can register online from their COAST account or from the CCGA mobile app, which is available for smartphone users. Just search for the name CCGA, Mariners App or College of Coastal Georgia on the App Store, download and begin registering for classes. It’s as simple as 1, 2, 3.

“Students need to be thinking about the end goal — earning that degree. Taking a proactive approach can help a student save time and money getting to graduation,” she said.
