St. Simons Island, GA –

Dr. Sarah Hartman’s Effective Instruction: Language Arts service-learning class presented the Boys & Girls Club on St Simons Island with an early/middle grades Literacy Library. The Library consists of books purchased through a service-learning mini-grant.

Through the collaborative efforts of the administration and certified teaching staff at St. Simon’s Boys and Girls Club, CCGA teacher candidates created and implemented kinesthetic, literacy-based English/Language Arts (ELA) lesson plans for use in tutoring and homework help that incorporated and aligned with the Georgia Common Core ELA standards for students in grades 4-8 during the Fall 2014 semester.

These activities were geared towards all populations of students, sensitive to varying learning needs/methods, physical needs, and cultural/racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, and provided for student engagement through various writing activities and procedures that did not require nor encourage the use of a textbook of the teacher candidates while they were teaching the material. The activities were presented to the certified teaching staff and 4-8 grade students at St. Simon’s Boys and Girls Club as a method for engaging students in effective ELA and writing activities.

The research and implementation of literacy and kinesthetic-based activities integrated into ELA standards conducted by the teacher candidates also served to increase their own knowledge and experience in working with the Georgia Common Core ELA Standards for students in grades 4-8 who had diverse learning needs.
