By the time Max Oliver finished his sophomore year at Wayne County High School, he had completed his upper level classes. He wanted something more and was looking for a challenge.

Oliver,18, signed up to participate in the Dual Enrollment program (formerly Move On When Ready) at the College of Coastal Georgia and has been taking classes at the College since his junior year in high school. Through the Dual Enrollment Program, Oliver has earned both college credit and credit towards his high school graduation May 25. In the fall, he will attend the Georgia Institute of Technology. He’ll step onto Georgia Tech’s campus as a freshman but will be considered a junior in coursework.

College of Coastal Georgia Dual Enrollment student Max Oliver is prepared for the next phase of his life after high school.

The Dual Enrollment program at the College of Coastal Georgia provides high school students the opportunity to earn college credits while still pursing high school diplomas or home study completion.

Oliver is now a senior at Wayne County High School. He is in charge of the school’s Robotics Team, is the historian for BETA Club, participated in Student Council.

Through Dual Enrollment, Oliver has been able to take classes specifically related to his career aspirations. He plans to become an aerospace engineer, focusing on air propulsion. He’s taken physics, calculus, computer science, as well as other non-related classes at the College that have sparked his interest, such as philosophy.

Oliver has been enjoying his on-campus experience at the College, it wasn’t always easy for Oliver at the College. He had to quickly learn how to keep up with his coursework and manage his time.

“If you’re not on top of things, it’s a lot easier to get behind. As long as you stay on top of your work you will do well. I learned that my first semester here. Once I get all my classwork done, I’ll go to the recreation center and play pool, play video games, basketball, or tennis,” he said. In the process, he has been making new friends, some of whom include Wayne County High School alums attending the College.

Oliver feels prepared for the next phase of his academic career. He believes that becoming accustomed to the rigor of courses at the College and learning how to manage his classwork will help him at Georgia Tech.

“If I didn’t learn how to manage my courses here, I don’t think I would do that well at Georgia Tech,” he said.

He encourages other high school students to consider participating in the Dual Enrollment Program.

“Do it,” Oliver said. “Not only can it help when you apply to colleges, but you learn a lot more and gain the discipline you need to succeed in college.”

The Dual Enrollment Program at the College of Coastal Georgia is offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.
