COOK-OFF TO BENEFIT AMERICA’S SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK

June 25, 2018
By: Tedi Rountree

College of Coastal Georgia culinary students will host the 5th Annual Cook-Off to benefit America’s Second Harvest Food Bank. The cooking contest will be held Wednesday, June 27, starting at 10:30 a.m. at the College’s Campus Center and is open to the public.

Each student will create a recipe using ingredients available at the America’s Second Harvest warehouse. The students will use ingredients not commonly found in recipes, which have been difficult to distribute at the food bank. Students will have three minutes to grab their food items and 80 percent of the ingredients used in the dishes must be available at America’s Second Harvest.

With a donation of $1, attendees will be able to taste the dishes and vote for their favorite. All proceeds will be given to the local America’s Second Harvest Food Bank. Additional cash donations, non-perishable canned goods, and paper products will also be accepted. Recipes and nutrition information will be available.

The contest is the culminating event for culinary students’ Introductory Chemistry summer class. It serves as service-learning project, where students apply skills learned in the classroom in real world situations and collaborate with local agencies. Culinary students partnered with America’s Second Harvest to help deepen their understanding of the connection between food and chemistry. The goals of this project are for students to learn about the work done by America’s Second Harvest, to reflect on the importance of the work, and to provide healthy, easy to follow recipes using canned goods available at the food bank in Brunswick.
