Brunswick, GA – The College of Coastal Georgia will be one of four schools in the University System of Georgia expanding their foreign language programs through a new online eMajor system approved by the USG Board of Regents in May.
Baccalaureate degrees in French and Spanish will be offered as well as minors in French and Spanish and two career-oriented certificate programs: Spanish for Professionals and a Teacher/English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL/ESOL) certificate.
The eMajor is a collaborative program developed by the University System of Georgia to complement the Complete College Georgia initiative. The online courses, which include task-based exercises as well as instruction, are designed to make college degrees more accessible and enhance the skills of working professionals.
Three other schools are participating in these programs: Armstrong State University (French), Clayton State University, and Valdosta State University (French and Spanish). Coastal Georgia and Valdosta will offer the full spectrum, including Spanish for Professionals certification which is designed for careers such as medicine, criminal justice, public administration and business in which the ability to communicate in Spanish will enhance success.
Dr. Tracy Pellett, Vice President for Academic Affairs, noted that the eMajors in French and Spanish are in keeping with the College’s mission statement, which includes:
Students are prepared for meaningful careers, advanced study, lifelong learning, and participation in a global and technological society. As a state college of the University System of Georgia, the institution will provide expanded Baccalaureate degree offerings that support the intellectual, economic and cultural needs of the community and region.
“This allows the College to quickly and cost effectively expand our Bachelor of Arts degrees in areas impactful to our global society as well as to the changing demographics of our communities,” Dr. Pellett said. “The programs include modern intercultural understanding which are beneficial in both corporate and social agency settings. We appreciate the timely efforts of the Board of Regents to enhance the spectrum of degree offerings that will support the diversity of our campus and the career competitiveness of our graduates. Additionally, these online programs offer flexible scheduling, which is helpful to our students already in the workplace.”
The new foreign language eMajor degrees and certificate programs will be available beginning fall term 2015 at CCGA.
