Adult Learners

Adult Learners (out of high school for a minimum of five years) must have graduated from an accredited high school or qualified high school equivalency program to be classified as Non-Traditional Students. There are two types of Non-Traditional students:

Adult/Non-Traditional Freshman or Freshman Transfer

An applicant who has been out of high school at least five years, whose high school class graduated at least five years ago, and who has not attended college or earned fewer than 30 transferrable semester credit hours may be evaluated as an adult/non-traditional freshman.

Adult/Non-Traditional Transfers

An applicant who has been out of high school at least five years or whose high school class graduated at least five years ago, and who has earned 30 or more transferrable semester credit hours may be evaluated as an adult/non-traditional transfer. Requirements are the same as a transfer applicant.

To gain regular admission, all adult learners/non-traditional freshmen must:

  • Graduate (earn a high school diploma) and submit a final high school transcript from an accredited secondary school or
  • Present high school equivalency scores (not diploma) as well as partial high school transcript and
  • If applicable, official transcripts from all previous colleges or universities attended.

GED Students

Upon admission, you may be required to take the ACCUPLACER test, a computerized placement test that measures skills in math, reading, and writing. Learn more information about the Accuplacer and sign up to take the test on the Testing Center page.

Adult Learner/Non-Traditional Transfer Requirements

To gain regular admission, all adult learners/non-traditional transfer students must submit:

  • Official transcripts from all previous colleges or universities attended with at least 30 or more earned transferable credit hours.
  • Must be in good academic standing and eligible to continue or return to any previous institution attended. Students who are on academic probation or suspension from a previous school may be required to provide a written personal statement and may be requested to provide additional information. The student may also be subject to an interview by appropriate college personnel before being considered for admission to the College.

Students completing non-transferable associate degrees at regionally accredited institutions will be evaluated on an individual basis to determine their eligibility for admission. Students who have earned a career associate degree may apply for admission to a program leading to the baccalaureate degree according to the criteria for admission for the program. Students with an earned career associate degree will not be held to RHSC requirements.

Amendment 23 – 62 or Older Program

Georgia residents 62 years of age or older may utilize the Amendment 23 enrollment and tuition waiver pathway once admitted to the College as a degree seeking or non-degree seeking student. The Amendment 23 program allows Georgia residents over the age of 62 to enroll in state colleges or universities on a space-available basis, tuition free, except for supplies, laboratory or shop fees.

To be eligible for enrollment under the Amendment 23 provision, applicants must:

  • be residents of Georgia, 62 years of age or older at the time of registration, and shall present a birth certificate or other comparable written documentation of age to enable the institution to determine eligibility. Please note, students will be asked to complete an Amendment 23 waiver form after acceptance.

Degree Seeking Amendment 23 Students:

If you are seeking a degree or course credit, you must first apply online and submit the $25 application fee and meet all requirements based on your classification (freshman, transfer, post-bac).

Non-Degree Seeking Amendment 23 Students:

If you are auditing as a 62+ student, apply online and submit the $25 application fee and have official transcripts sent from the last college attended.
