The College of Coastal Georgia serves a diverse group of military personnel, their family members, and veterans with disabilities. Our students are from all branches of the armed forces including active and inactive reserve units. The VA Certifying Official located in the Financial Aid Office is dedicated to provide assistance one-on-one assistance. We are here to help you get started!

New Students Applying for Veterans Benefits

Veterans and dependents if you are applying for VA Education Benefits for the first time, please note the following guidelines:

In addition to the general admission procedures, students applying for veterans benefits will need to take some additional steps.

Chapter 33 ( Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance)

  1. Visit the Department of Veterans Affairs website (http://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits) to submit application. Keep a copy for your records.
  2. Once approved provide a copy of VA Application and copy of VA CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILTY (COE) to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office.DD-214 member 4, and Kicker Contract documents required from veterans only.

For all Post 9/11 GI Bill/ Transfer of Entitlement information and inquiries, refer to the website http://www.gibill.va.gov. Or call 1.888.442-.551. Please note: the Veteran must apply to transfer benefits with the Dept. of Defense (DOD) and an approval email response must be submitted with the VA Application for Transfer of Entitlement, (Form 22-1990E)

Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty Education Assistance Program)

  1. Complete and submit the VA Application for Educational Benefits (Form 22-1990) (http://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits) to submit application. Keep a copy for your records.
  2. Once approved provide a copy of VA application and Copy of VA CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY(COE) along with DD-214 member 4, and Kicker Contract submit to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office.

Chapter 1606 (Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve Educational Assistance Program)

  1. Complete and submit the VA Application for Education Benefits (Form 22-1990) (http://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits) to submit application. Keep a copy for your records.
  2. Once approved provide a copy of VA application and Copy of VA CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY(COE) NOBE and (Form DD-2384); obtain from you unit and a copy of the Kicker Contract and submit to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office.

Chapter 1607 (Reserve Educational Assistance Program – REAP)

  1. Complete and submit the VA Application for Education Benefits (Form 22-1990) (http://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits) to submit application. Keep a copy for your records.
  2. Once approved provide a copy of VA application and Copy of VA CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY(COE) NOBE and (Form DD-2384); obtain from you unit and a copy of the Kicker Contract and submit to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office.

Chapter 31 (Vocational Rehabilitation Educational Assistance Program)

  1. The Department of Veteran Affairs Rehabilitation Counselor must provide you with the Authorization and Certification of Entrance or Re-entrance into Rehabilitation and Certification Status.
  2. Once approved provide a copy of the (22-1905) to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office.

Chapter 35 (Application for Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance Form

  1. Complete and submit the VA Application for Education Benefits (Form 22-5490) (http://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits)to submit application. Keep a copy for your records.
  2. Once approved provide a copy of the (22-1905) to the VA Certifying Official in the Financial Aid Office.

If you have used VA Benefits at another institution school and are transferring to College of Coastal Georgia:

Veterans

  • Complete the request for change of program or place of training form (VA Form 22-1995) to declare a new school and new program.

Dependents

  • Survivor and eligible dependent transfer students should complete (VA-Form 22-5495) request for change of program or place of training survivors and dependents’ education assistance

Notes

  • It takes approximately 30-60 days for the Veterans Administration to process an application. Payments are usually received within 6-10 weeks.
  • Payments are issued based on the type of education benefits you are receiving and the number of enrolled hours and program of study.
  • Plan to Pay for your tuition and fees (not covered by your VA Educations benefits) by the payment deadline.
  • Students are encouraged to complete the free application for federal student aid (FAFSA) Free Application Free Student Aid: Please visit www.fafsa.ed.gov for more information.

Veterans Benefits

  • It takes approximately 30-60 days for the Veterans Administration to process an application. Payments are usually received within 6-10 weeks.
  • Payments are issued based on the type of education benefits you are receiving and the number of enrolled hours and program of study.
  • The Office of Financial Aid must be notified that you have applied for VA educational benefits since it is possible that receipt of VA funds could affect federal guaranteed loans and grants.

Student Responsibilities

  • Notify Financial Aid that you are applying for VA educational benefits and the amount of such benefits including buy-ups, kickers, etc.
  • Plan To Pay for your tuition and fees by the fee deadline through means of your own. Students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Please visit the financial aid website for more information
  • Attend Class according to the professor’s policy. Failing a class because of attendance reasons will result in decreased payments.
  • Report Immediately
    • Graduation
    • Repeat Courses
    • Change of Address
    • Change of Major
    • Withdrawal From School
    • Change in Hours (withdrawals or increases)
  • Monitor Your Curriculum with your advisor. Classes not pertaining to your degree will not be paid for by VA.
  • Verify Your Attendance on the last day of each month if you are Chapter 30, 1606 or 1607. Payment will not be generated for you by VA unless this takes place.
  • Withdrawing from a class. If you withdraw from a class during the semester you must notify the VA certifying official.

Work Study

The work-study program allows you to perform work for VA in return for an hourly wage. You may perform outreach services under the supervision of a VA employee, prepare and process VA paperwork, or work in the Veterans’ Lounges on the Brunswick or Camden campuses.

You must train at the three-quarter or full-time rate. The maximum number of hours you may work is 25 times the number of weeks in your enrollment period. Payments will be at the Federal minimum wage or your State minimum wage, whichever is greater.
