Department of Social Sciences

Social Sciences offers courses in anthropology, global issues, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology. Study in psychology leads to the Bachelor of Science in Psychology or the associate degree. Study in all other areas leads to the associate degree and is considered preparation for four-year degrees in majors in the Social Sciences and liberal arts. Social Sciences coursework provides the student with a broad knowledge of human society and aids in the understanding of self and one's relationship to other individuals.

Department of Social Sciences Mission

It is the mission of the Department of Social Sciences to promote academic excellence and encourage active learning through rigorous and comprehensive instruction, discipline-specific research, and community engagement. The department emphasizes flexibility of scheduling through the use of on-site, on-line, distance, and hybrid course delivery while developing skills necessary for meaningful careers and admission to graduate programs.

Attendance Policy: The policy of the department of social sciences is that students must attend class. Some absences may be unavoidable but should be rare. Individual instructor’s attendance policy is written in course syllabi and the department supports instructor discretion to impose penalties up to letter grade penalties as appropriate for student class absences.

Class Waiting Lists: The default position for the department of social sciences is that there are no waiting lists for courses. Individual instructors may establish and maintain such waiting lists for an individual course at the instructor’s discretion after informing the department coordinator and the department chair in writing of their intent to do so for a particular course. It will be the students responsibility to contact the instructor during the add drop period to determine if a seat has become available. If a seat is available it is the student’s responsibility to take the appropriate measures to register for the course.
