College of Coastal Georgia News
The Marshes of Glynn Libraries' Reading Rocks Summer Program is getting a boost from College of Coastal Georgia students and faculty member Elizabeth Brabson, lecturer of geology. Under the direction of Brabson and members of the library staff, students will be hosting two events at the St. Simons Library — "Rocking STEM Day" on June 28 at 10:30 a.m. and "Music Game Day" on July 5 at 10:30 a.m.
The collaboration between the College and the Marshes of Glynn Libraries is part of a service-learning project built into the students' physical sciences course. During the Reading Rocks Summer Program, students will work with children on hands-on science activities.
"The Reading Rocks program offers a great opportunity for the students to engage with children in our community and use fun and creative methods to introduce kids to science," said Brabson.
The service-learning program at the College was instituted in 2010 as a way to connect students, faculty, and the College community to the community at large. The intent of service-learning projects is to collaborate with local agencies to identify community needs in Glynn and surrounding counties and address those needs through student-led projects. The projects are designed to reinforce classroom learnings while providing a meaningful service to the community.
