School of Business & Public Management
Dean's WelcomeWelcome to the website of the School of Business and Public Management (SBPM). You will find exciting and varied degree programs. Also, you will learn about our community engagement as well as student organizations that will enhance your experience at the College of Coastal Georgia. We offer bachelor level degrees in Business, Criminal Justice, Health Informatics, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Public Management, and Workforce Management and Leadership. Each of these degree programs offers a variety of areas of concentrated study. These areas range from Accounting in Business to Cyber Security in Criminal Justice to Non-Profit Leadership in Public Management. While these degrees are very different, the common elements in all areas of study are effective decision-making, dynamic analysis in an uncertain world, and meaningful leadership. We also offer the Bachelor of Applied Science in Workforce Management and Leadership. This degree is focused on individuals who have been technically trained who seek positions of leadership in their place of work.
At the associate degree level we offer degree programs in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Information Technology and Criminal Justice. These degrees prepare you to enter other University System of Georgia (USG) institutions while also efficiently linking to the bachelor programs in SBPM.
We also offer a Career Associates degrees in Culinary Arts and in Hospitality Management. Our program in culinary arts is the only program in USG that is accredited by the American Culinary Federation, the highest accreditation offered in culinary science. It is also possible to add a BBA degree with a concentration in Hospitality, Resort and Tourism Management with only two additional years of academic work. This is a great combination for budding creative chefs who also see themselves as entrepreneurial restaurateurs.
The College of Coastal Georgia and SBPM are committed to the service-learning paradigm. In the stakeholder theory of business, effective leaders come to understand that there is more to success than simply attending to the bottom line. There are other constituencies that must be considered by effective leaders. With service learning, students engage the non-profit and for-profit sectors and then reflect on the nuances of these different business models. Also all Bachelor degree programs require senior internship experiences that allow students to mix theory with practice while guided by intern hosts. These 15-week experiences are a wonderful bridge between college and the workplace.
The Brown Family Executive-in-Residence is a retired or semi-retired leader who lectures and teaches occasional classes across all degree programs, advises students on careers, and organizes informal lunches for the campus community. These executives bring energy and perspective to campus that gives classroom additional meaning.
Coastal Conversations on Leadership is an ongoing series of live interviews featuring prominent Golden Isles residents who have had outstanding careers and are willing to share their experiences with the community. The fundamental goal of Coastal Conversations is to enrich the environment of learning that one finds at the College of Coastal Georgia. All interviews are conducted by the current holder of the Brown Family Executive-in-Residence chair.
The School of Business and Public Management supports three dynamic student organizations.
- Phi Beta Lambda is a student group originally chartered in 1966. Today this organization lends students the opportunity to network and build and develop leadership, team-building, and communication skills while working with local business leaders as they transition from college to the professional world.
- C.H.E.F. (Culinary and Hospitality Educational Fellowship) offers culinary students the opportunity to participate in outside activities including culinary competitions such as the Shrimp and Grits Festival on Jekyll Island.
- The Health Informatics Society is for students wanting to further engage with the health care community.
Finally, I encourage you to the ‘Faculty’ link. You will find that the full-time faculty has amazing academic credentials and careers. Our professional adjunct faculty has a variety of backgrounds ranging from corporate marketing leadership to being a current instructor at the world renown Federal Law Enforcement Training Center located near campus.
