What is Blackboard Collaborate Ultra?
Collaborate Ultra is a synchronous video conferencing tool that is built into Brightspace (D2L). Similar to a web conference, Collaborate Ultra allows you to interact with students using text chat, audio, video, and a white board.
Faculty can use Collaborate Ultra to:
- Host online office hours
- Conduct an online lecture and question-and-answer session
- Bring in a guest lecturer
- Review for a test
- Give feedback on student writing
- Listen to student presentations
- Allow students to work in groups
- Share a computer screen
- Conduct class while you are at a conference
After you add Ultra to your course, you can use the “course room,” which is an open session dedicated to your course. Select Join room to join the course room any time.
Alternatively, you can create a session for an online lecture.
Follow the steps in this handout for details.

Ultra works best with Chrome. All faculty and students who use Ultra are encouraged to download and install Chrome.
