Student Affairs Leadership Awards

Each spring the College of Coastal Georgia recognizes outstanding student leadership through a series of awards presented to students and student organizations.

Do you know of students or student organizations that are deserving of recognition? If so, nominate them for one of the awards below. All nominees, both individual and organization, must have no record of formal discipline or sanction at the time of the nomination to be eligible for awards.

Applications/Nominations will open on February 24, 2017 and will close March 31, 2017.

Award Winners will be announced at the 6th Annual Student Leadership Awards Ceremony on April 24, 2017 at 7:00pm in the Stembler Theatre.

The criterion for each award is listed below. To nominate an individual or student group for the award, simply click the Nominate Now button next to each award or follow specific instructions.

CCGA Student Hall of Fame Award

The CCGA Student Hall of Fame seeks to recognize senior students who have made significant contributions to the betterment of the College of Coastal Georgia. Membership in the CCGA Hall of Fame is the single highest honor bestowed on a student at the College and is reserved for a maximum of 15 students each year.

Qualifications:

1.Students must be classified as a senior by the Office of the Registrar at the time of application. (Students graduating the term immediately preceding the application term are also eligible.)

2.Students must be in good academic and judicial standing with the College at the time of application

In addition, students inducted into the Hall of Fame must have demonstrated exemplary leadership and skill in at least two of the following areas of college life:

Contribution to campus life – Students must have held leadership roles in and made significant contributions to the College community through campus clubs and organizations.

Athletic accomplishment – Students must have demonstrated talent in their chosen sport and exhibited significant leadership qualities in the team setting. Both intercollegiate and club sport teams will be considered.

Academic achievement / scholarly contribution – Students must have demonstrated above average performance in their academic work and/or contributed significantly to their chosen area of study through research and/or scholarly activities.

Service to the community – Students must have participated in a significant amount of community service activities at the campus, local, state, national, or international level in which at least half of the service was done in conjunction with / on behalf of the College of Coastal Georgia.

Ability to overcome adversity – Students must have demonstrated the ability to overcome significant personal adversity in order to complete their education.

Rising Star Leader Award
This award is presented to a first-year student that has distinguished himself/herself during their first year at CCGA or a student that has shown remarkable improvement over the past year.

Selection Criteria
  • Full-time, first-time freshman
  • Shows great potential for future contributions to campus life
  • Effectively planned and implemented beneficial activities for the campus community
  • Engaged in a leadership role and made a contribution to student life
  • Has distinguished themselves during their first year on campus or student has shown remarkable improvement over the past year and can provide evidence of improvement

Mariner’s Pride Award

This award is presented to a student leader who has demonstrated true school pride through involvement in campus sponsored activities.

Selection Criteria
  • Nominee must maintain good academic standards
  • Must display a strong sense of school spirit and pride
  • Must have significantly impacted co-curricular life at CCGA in non-paid positions
  • Serves as a role model for other student leaders
  • Must have overall outstanding leadership history throughout their career at CCGA
  • Must have no formal discipline record with the College

Inspiration Award

This award seeks to recognize a student who plays a significant role in creating a safe and welcoming campus environment, and a deeper understanding of diversity and social justice to create intercultural understanding that embraces and promotes the broad scope of diversity at CCGA.

Selection Criteria

  • Nominee must be in good academic standing
  • Serves as a role model for other students

Outstanding Service Award
Presented to an individual and to a group for their participation in community service during the past academic year.

Selection Criteria
  • Must be a currently enrolled student OR currently registered student organization
  • Service must not have been part of a requirement for a class, local or national organization requirement, or required in any way, etc.
  • Must not have been compensated, received scholarship or stipend, been employed for service, or must not have been provided monetary gain for the service
  • Nominees do not have to be a member of a student organization
  • Efforts must be voluntary in nature

Student Employee of the Year Award

This award honors an outstanding student employee who has made a positive impact on their department, the college, or the community and has demonstrated exceptional reliability, quality of work, initiative, and professionalism. Nominations may be submitted only by a staff or faculty member who supervises the nominee.

Selection Criteria
  • Must be a currently enrolled student at CCGA
  • Must be employed in an on-campus department
  • Must have demonstrated a consistent willingness to go above and beyond the requirements for their job
  • Must be a team player

Unsung Hero Award
This award is presented to a student that puts his/her heart and soul into everything he/she does, consistently goes above and beyond, but often goes unrecognized.

Selection Criteria
  • Is an "unsung hero" among students
  • Often works "behind the scenes"
  • Routinely goes above and beyond typical requirements
  • Mentors, supports, encourages, and inspires the organization's members or other students
  • His/her efforts enhance campus life
  • Receives no compensation for their involvement/work
  • Is not being nominated for their work as an officer or student employee

Non-Traditional Student of the Year (student over 26)
This award is presented to a student who is age 26 years or older and who has juggled significant life responsibilities while maintaining a good academic record and being involved in the CCGA campus community. This student is a leader among other adult students.

Selection Criteria
  • Must possess a good academic record
  • Must be classified as a sophomore or above, preference to juniors and seniors
  • Must exhibit strong sense of school pride and spirit
  • Must demonstrate significant life responsibilities along with academic and leadership involvement
  • Must demonstrate involvement and contribution to campus life and/or community activities
  • May not be compensated for the award criteria listed, such as grad assistants, scholarship or work study for work, or any other appointment, involvement may not be as part of a job or paid scholarship for a position or duty, etc.

Organization Awards


Student Organization of the Year Award
This award is presented to the registered student organization that has best displayed spirit for its organization and the College.

Selection Criteria
  • Organization is registered with the Office of Student Life
  • Organization has earned three Sails
  • Has been a positive, visible organization on campus at various events
  • Must submit proof of spirit, i.e. pictures, awards
  • Represents an exciting and lively presence at CCGA events
  • Ongoing participation in campus and community activities

Outstanding Organization Service Award
Presented to an individual and to a group for their participation in community service during the past academic year that contributed positively to the CCGA campus or greater Brunswick/Camden community.

Selection Criteria
  • Must be a currently enrolled student OR currently registered student organization
  • Service must not have been part of a requirement for a class, local or national organization requirement, or required in any way, etc.
  • Must not have been compensated, received scholarship or stipend, been employed for service, or must not have been provided monetary gain for the service
  • Nominees do not have to be a member of a student organization
  • Efforts must be voluntary in nature

This award is presented to the registered student organization that has distinguished itself during the first year of existence on campus OR any registered organization that has shown remarkable improvement over the past year.

Selection Criteria
  • Shows great potential for future contributions to campus life
  • Registered with the Office of Student Life
  • Has clear sense of mission and goals for the organization
  • Advisor has been involved in the organization's planning and activities
  • Effectively planned and implemented beneficial activities for the campus community
  • Offers its members the opportunity to develop leadership roles and make a contribution to student life

Department Awards

Career Development Award
The Career Development Award is awarded to one main campus student and one Camden Center student. To be eligible, students must attend at least one career development program and submit a three paragraph essay (300 words or less) detailing how the event helped (or will help) them plan, prepare, and pursue their dreams (career goals)—Career Services' motto. The Career Services Advisory Board will review every essay (using a rubric) and select two award recipients. All self-nominations (essays) should be sent to careerservices@ccga.edu
Striving for Excellence Award (Disability Services)
Faculty will be asked to nominate a student with a disability who they believe has remained or become self-reliant and has excelled in their course despite the challenges they have faced due to having a disability. We will choose a 'winner' and verify their willingness to participate in the awards ceremony since it involves identifying them as a person with a disability. The focus of their receiving the award will be based on their character and achievements, but no specific information regarding disability will be revealed.

In order to be nominated for this award, students must:
  • have disclosed that they have a disability by presenting the instructor with an accommodation letter
  • have demonstrated strong academic performance
  • have regularly attended classes
  • have actively participated in discussions, assignments, etc.
  • have demonstrated a desire to learn and appear interested in the course topic
Also, please include a brief narrative explaining why you nominated the student. All nominations must be submitted through email to jzak@ccga.edu by March 31, 2017 at 5 p.m. to be considered by the award selection committee.
