Mr. Walter Wright

Walter Wright is an assistant professor and the senior advisor for the ACF-accredited Associate in Applied Science in Hospitality Management program in the School of Business and Public Management. He has been employed with the college since 1995; full time since 2000. He was reared at The Greenbrier, a five-star resort in West Virginia. He attended Cornell University and graduated magna cum laude with a BS degree in Hotel Administration in 1974. Upon graduation, he spent over twenty years in various executive management positions with numerous resort hotels throughout the country.

In 1997, Walter received his teaching certification from the College of Coastal Georgia. He became a CHA (Certified Hospitality Administrator) in 1987, and obtained his CHE (Certified Hospitality Educator) in 2002. In 2014, he added a CHIA (Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics). Additionally, he is a certified ServSafe instructor for the National Restaurant Association. He has been instrumental in the college's Culinary Arts Program including its accreditation by the prestigious ACF (American Culinary Federation). The College of Coastal Georgia is one of only nine Georgia institutions to have earned this designation. He is currently working to help the college obtain accreditation through ACPHA (Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration). He is also working to establish certification with the RCA (Research Chefs Association) through the College of Coastal Georgia’s association with the University of Georgia’s Food Science Program. He is a Certified Customer Service Specialist for Georgia Quickstart, a business initiative for the state.

Walter is an active member of ICHRIE (International Council of Hotel/Restaurant and Institutional Education) and SECHRIE (Southeast Council of Hotel/Restaurant and Institutional Education) which involves opportunities to attend workshops around the country and network with other industry professionals globally as well as regionally. Locally, the various functions of the culinary program keep him involved in community affairs. He maintains the professional relationships he has developed over many years in the Golden Isles partially through involvement with the Culinary and Hospitality Advisory Committees. He maintains a relationship with Cornell through his memberships in Phi Kappa Phi and the Cornell Hotel Society. He is also actively engaged in his church, St. Simons Community Church.

He embraces the philosophy that student learning and success are a faculty member's main reason for being; a belief that was instrumental in his being named the college's Advisor of the Year for 2008.

As Senior Advisor for the Hospitality Management Program (AAS) and for the concentration in Hospitality, Resort, and Tourism in the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Walter is responsible for advising all students declaring these programs.

Mr. Wright has developed a program that provides convenient progression from the AAS in Hospitality Management to the BBA. Mr. Wright holds the philosophy that a student should achieve balance and harmony in their personal life in order to perform optimally in their studies. While learning is the primary concern at CCGA, development as a person is especially important in the hospitality field. He guides advisees in recognizing goals, aspirations, strengths, and weaknesses. Using this information and considering other aspects of student life such as financial aid, work and family responsibilities, Walter works with each student to develop a plan for success in their chosen specialization.

Mr. Wright is responsible for maintaining the culinary cohort applicant list and providing information to perspective applicants, compiling cohort schedules, advising students and registration.
