Grants

Grants are gift aid that is not repaid. Only undergraduates who have not previously received a bachelor's degree are eligible. Grants are awarded to those who exhibit exceptional financial need and apply for aid by the priority filing date. Several types of grants are described below:

Federal Pell Grant

Pell Grants are need-based grants awarded to eligible undergraduate students who do not have a bachelor's degree. Award amounts are based on the assumption of full-time enrollment. Award amounts may be reduced for less than full-time enrollment. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Education. Eligibility

  1. Demonstrate financial need, as determined by federal need-analysis methodology(FAFSA).
  2. Enrolled in an eligible public college, university, or technical college as an undergraduate student seeking a college degree or technical certificate/diploma.
  3. Must not have earned bachelor's or graduate level college degree.
  4. Be a U.S. citizen or national of the U.S. or have evidence from INS of eligible permanent resident alien status.
  5. Be in compliance with Selective Service registration requirements.
  6. Not be in default or owe a refund on a federal financial aid program.
  7. Maintain satisfactory academic progress, as defined by the college.
Award Amount

The maximum Pell Grant award is $5,550 for the 2010-2011 award year. Each recipient's award may vary, depending upon the expected family contribution and the number of hours the student is enrolled.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

SEOG is awarded to undergraduate students who do not have a bachelor's degree and who demonstrate exceptional financial need. Award amounts vary and preference is given to students who apply before May 1. Student must complete the FAFSA to be considered for SEOG. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Education.

Eligibility
  1. Demonstrate financial need, as determined by federal need-analysis methodology (FAFSA).
  2. Enrolled in an eligible public college, university, or technical college as an undergraduate student seeking a college degree or technical certificate/diploma.
  3. Must not have earned bachelor's or graduate level college degree.
  4. Be a U.S. citizen or national of the U.S. or have evidence from INS of eligible permanent resident alien status.
  5. Be in compliance with Selective Service registration requirements.
  6. Not be in default or owe a refund on a federal financial aid program.
  7. Maintain satisfactory academic progress, as defined by the college.
Award Amount

The maximum FSEOG award is $4,000 per year. Each recipient's award amount varies depending upon the expected family contribution compared to the cost of attendance, the number of hours in which the student is enrolled. Generally, eligible students are awarded $450 for the academic year.

All eligible students who complete the FAFSA before May 1st are considered for SEOG.

Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)

ACG grants are need-based grants to assist eligible students who completed a rigorous high school program of study. Recipients must be Pell eligible. Funding is provided by the Department of Education.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the ACG, you must be:
  • U.S. citizen.
  • A Pell Grant recipient.
  • Enrolled full-time in a degree program.
  • Entering freshmen who have completed a "rigorous secondary school program," as designated by the state in which the student resided when completing the program.
  • Sophomores who have completed a "rigorous secondary school program," and have a cumulative 3.0 GPA during freshman year.
Award Amount

Eligible students may receive up to $750.00 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1300.00 for the second year of undergraduate study. Full-time enrollment is required.

Eligible students must complete the FAFSA.
