Associate of Science in Nursing

The Associate of Science in Nursing track prepares the student to take the national examination leading to licensure as a Registered Nurse. It is a challenging, demanding, and rewarding program for students who are willing to make a serious commitment.
This track is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 500, Atlanta, Georgia 30326 (404-975-5000) and fully approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing, 237 Coliseum Dr. , Macon , GA 31217-3858 (478-207-1640).

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Complete the College of Coastal Georgia application, including transcripts, testing, immunization records, and a declared pre-nursing major. Submit to Registrar's Office.
  2. Applicants must meet/perform the core performance standards for nursing as listed in the college's ADA plan.
  3. Complete the ASN track application, (on website) including transcripts. Enrollment is limited. Applications for early consideration are due January 15. No applications will be accepted for the current year after April 15. Applications will be considered based on qualifications and space availability (if there are more qualified applicants than spaces in the program, a point system based on required academic courses and grades in those courses may be utilized in final admissions decisions).
  4. Program application must be updated yearly.
  5. Learning Support courses (if required) must be completed prior to applying for the nursing program.
  6. Students are accepted into the first nursing course in the fall semester only.
  7. Students with two failures in nursing courses will not be considered for admission unless the failures occurred 5 or more years ago.
  8. Testing is required for admission consideration. Contact a nursing advisor for current testing requirements.
  9. Biology 1110, English 1101, and Psychology 1101 must be completed prior to admission to the nursing program. Must have a minimum grade of "C” in all biology and English courses.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

  1. Students are strongly encouraged to complete all non-nursing academic courses prior to entering the nursing sequence.
  2. Applicants must meet specific requirements to be considered for admission to the ASN track. If there are more applicants than spaces in the ASN track, a point system based on required academic courses and grades in those courses may be utilized in final admission decisions.
  3. To be eligible for admission to the ASN track the student must have at least a 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) in all academic courses required.
  4. Continuation in the nursing program requires a minimum grade of 75% in all nursing courses.
  5. A 2.0 GPA must be maintained in all nursing, biology and English courses.
  6. All non-nursing academic courses should be completed before the student enters Nursing 2112.
  7. All nursing courses must be completed within four years of the date of entry into the first nursing course.
  8. Students accepted into the nursing program are required to submit a current physical and meet/perform the core performance standards for nursing.
  9. Evidence of current immunizations, tuberculosis skin test (PPD), hepatitis B series and CPR certification (health care provider level) must be submitted prior to entering a clinical setting, and maintained throughout the program.

Students must have an overall 2.0 cumulative grade point average to graduate.

EXPENSES
In addition to the regular college expenses, there are other expenses which include, but are not limited to, the purchase of official student uniforms and accessories, student liability insurance, physical exam, NCLEX application, and the nursing pin at graduation.
Nursing books for the first semester cost approximately $800.00. These books will be used throughout the nursing courses. The student must furnish his/her own transportation to these facilities.
Criminal background checks and/or drug testing may be required by individual agencies and the cost will be the responsibility of the student.
A personal computer is helpful. Students have assignments requiring computer usage.
