Student Update on Transition of Technical Programs
On July 1, 2008 the College of Coastal Georgia became a state college authorized to grant baccalaureate degrees. With this new mission we will
offer targeted baccalaureate degrees and continue to offer transfer and career associate degrees. As a part of the college’s mission change,
we will no longer offer technical programs. The technical programs at the College of Coastal Georgia will be transferred to Altamaha Technical
College. Beginning July 1, 2009, Altamaha Technical College will begin teaching the technical programs in Brunswick and will be located at the
Golden Isles Career Academy on Airport Road. Plans for the Camden Center are a shared facility, housing both the College of Coastal Georgia and
Altamaha Technical College programs.
The goals of both colleges are to have the students’ education needs met and for the transition to be as smooth as possible. The transition
process is in the planning stages, with each program and student record being evaluated. Courses (credits) taken at Coastal will be transferrable
to Altamaha and depending on the credit hours already taken in the major, courses to be taken at Altamaha may be transferred from Altamaha back to
Coastal. Each student will receive specific advisement to guide this process.
Change is never easy and this process will be no different. Both colleges are working diligently to provide students and the community with
accurate information. Altamaha Technical College is on the quarter system. This means that the starting and ending times for each quarter will
be different from the semester system. It is expected that Altamaha will have a summer session in Brunswick and Camden, but the dates and courses
to be offered have not been determined.
This transition will provide for much more focused and responsive technical college programming in the Glynn, Camden and McIntosh communities.
Ultimately, we believe you will find the systems to be more responsive to the needs of businesses and technical college students. We have a few
months of challenging planning, but once the systems are in place things should move smoothly. As this transition continues, we will update you
with pertinent information.
