Frequently Asked Questions

What topics should a student take?

The University System of Georgia has an established minimum College Preparatory Curriculum that applicants are expected to have completed. Though completion of all subjects is not required to gain admission to the college, we would suggest following the guidelines to best prepare you for the academic challenge of college. Those subjects are:
  • 4 units of English including grammar and usage, Literature, and advanced composition
  • 4 years of mathematics including Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry and an advanced course (Trigonometry, Statistics, Calculus)
  • 3 units of science including at least one laboratory course from life science and one laboratory course in physical science. (an additional unit will be expected for Fall 2012 applicants)
  • 3 units of social studies including U.S. and world history
  • 2 units of the same foreign language

What is the minimum ACT/SAT score?

All Home-Educated students are required by the University System of Georgia to meet the required scores set by the college in English and math to be considered for admission. The current scores for the college are ACT English 17 and ACT Math 17 or SAT Reading 430 and SAT Math 400. If your scores are low, please make an appointment with the Director of Admissions at 921.279.5731 to discuss your options.

Why is the ACT the preferred test?

Testing content for the SAT and the ACT is basically the same, but the scoring is not. The ACT can help the student demonstrate knowledge in not only the content fields of English and math, but also science and social studies. The college will consider the College Preparatory Curriculum requirements in science and social studies to be met if a student scores within the 55th percentile in those areas.

What if my scores in science and social studies are low?

Students receiving a score below the 55th percentile in science and/or social studies have the following options:
  • Complete extra college courses in that content area with a "C" or higher (this course will not be used toward meeting degree requirements)
  • Or, submit another type of nationally administered exam taken during the 12th grade year that reflects 55th percentile ranking (i.e. Iowa Basic Skills, California Achievement)

What type of information should a subject portfolio include?

Thorough and complete documentation of the hard work you have accomplished is the key to a successful review. The type of items to include are the names and publishers of the text used, information regarding on-line tutorials or specialized software used, course syllabus of topics covered, copies of exams and tests, statements from tutors if someone other than your primary teacher assisted in your studies, and any other information you feel played an important role in your learning experience. This information will go to a committee made up of faculty in that subject area to review and they will determine whether or not you have met the College Preparatory Curriculum requirements in that area.

What if I did not complete a Foreign Language?

Students who did not study a foreign language as a part of their program will still be considered for admission. However, they will be required to complete a college-level language course in addition to their regular degree requirements.
