Coastal Set to Celebrate Homecoming Week in February
Brunswick, GA – Beginning February 11, the College of Coastal Georgia hopes the campus and community will be awash in blue to celebrate Homecoming 2014. Commemorative T-shirts will be on sale at The Lighthouse, the College’s bookstore located in the Campus Center. The array of Coastal activities, many of which are open to the public, spans films and performance in the Stembler Theatre, a student talent show, the traditional pre-game tailgate party and pep rally, fast-action basketball between the Mariners and Faulkner University Eagles, and a Roaring Twenties-themed homecoming dance with the crowning of homecoming royalty.
Slam poet Gayle Danley kicks off the week with a performance in the Stembler Theatre on Tuesday, February 11 at 7 p.m. The award-winning writer and performer was recently selected for the Kennedy Center Roster of Professional Teaching Artists. Her website, gayledanley.com, describes Slam as combining “movement, voice, drama and the written word for an unforgettable spoken word experience.” The performance is free and open to the public.
The featured films are “Titus” from the series Timeless and Contemporary: 21st Century Adaptations of Shakespeare on Film on Wednesday, February 12 at 7 p.m. and “The Great Gatsby” on Friday, February 14 at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Admission is free to the Stembler Theatre showings and the public is invited.
Coastal’s Got Talent – Homecoming Edition will be staged on Thursday, February 13 at 8 p.m. in the Southeast Georgia Conference Center. The public is invited to join the audience as students perform.
On game day, Saturday, February 15, the community is invited to the campus tailgate party and pep rally between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the lawn and lot between the Coffin Gym and the Campus Center. The tailgate lunch will cost $5/person. In addition to music and various activities, the Mariner basketball players will be on hand at noon for a rousing rally prior to the games. Students will be competing in a chili cook-off, with alumni and other community members tasting and selecting two “people’s choice” winners.
The women’s basketball team tips off at 2 p.m. followed by the men’s basketball game at 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 15. They will be playing conference rival Faulkner University from Montgomery, Alabama. The 2014 Homecoming King and Queen will be announced during halftime at the men’s basketball game.
