Brunswick, GA – Bill Torrey and his late wife, Marta, will be recognized for their long-standing support of the College and the new athletic programs with the dedication of the Torrey Tennis Complex on Friday, November 1. The ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. at the tennis courts, located on campus adjacent to the Coffin Gymnasium, Campus Center and Student Activities Center. The public is invited.
Marta Bender Torrey was a passionate tennis player who enjoyed participating in the game well into her seventies, frequently traveling to New York in September to witness the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. Bill Torrey has served on the College Foundation Board of Trustees for more than three decades, including terms as chairman during the tenures of three College presidents. Mrs. Torrey was the devoted mother of two children, William F. Torrey III and Elisabeth Torrey Ansley, as well as an enthusiastic duplicate bridge player and an artist of note. One of her paintings, “Orange Bouquet,” is displayed in the College’s permanent collection.
In 2012, Torrey endowed a women’s tennis scholarship at the College in memory of his wife.
