Coastal squads earn victories

The College of Coastal Georgia tennis teams swept University of Illinois-Springfield on Monday at Coastal's campus in Brunswick, but the Coastal women lost to University of South Carolina-Upstate in the first of two contests on Monday.
USC-Upstate, an NCAA Division I school, defeated the NAIA Coastal women 6-0 in the morning by sweeping all six singles matches. The Coastal women, ranked 16th in the NAIA coaches poll, bounced back in the afternoon against Illinois-Springfield, an NCAA Division II school, with a 9-0 win.
Elektra Hunter won her No. 1 singles match 7-5, 6-4, and Kristina Polakovic earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Nicole Faas, Priti Rijal, Sunshine Beba and Luisa Lopes earned 6-0, 6-0 wins over their singles opponents.
In doubles play, the teams of Hunter and Polakovic (8-1), Faas and Rijal (8-3), and Beba and Lopes (8-0) picked up wins.
The Coastal men, ranked 22nd in the NAIA men's coaches poll, also earned a 9-0 win over the Prairie Stars.
The Mariners dropped just 19 games in six singles matches. Louis Volclair, Jose Zaatini, Robin Lucas, Malhar Mali, Alejandro Aquilino and Leif Shuman earned the wins for Coastal.
In the doubles matches, the teams of Volclair and Zaatini (8-3), Connor Bond and Mali (8-5), and Lucas and Aquilino (8-1) picked up the victories.
At the Auburn University at Montgomery Spring Invitational over the weekend, both Coastal teams amassed a 1-1 mark.
The Mariner men (6-3) lost 6-3 to 10th-ranked Xavier University of Louisiana on Friday, but rebounded with a 7-2 victory Saturday over Graceland University out of Iowa.
The Coastal women (4-6) won their first match Friday, defeating 13th-ranked Campbellsville University 8-1. The Mariners fell 8-1 to No. 10 Xavier on Saturday.
