Coastal's upset bid falls short

The College of Coastal Georgia basketball squads came up short Saturday in Southern States Athletic Conference action at Lee University.

The Coastal women pushed the fifth-ranked Lady Flames to the end before falling 72-69.

Janele Tucker gave Coastal a 67-65 lead with just over a minute left in the game. Lee regained the lead on a 3-pointer from Hollie German with 58 seconds left to play.

The Mariner women (14-4 overall, 6-2 SSAC) went back in front 69-68 with 24 seconds left on a pair of free throws from Margaret Harvey. German answered with two free throws of her own with 11 seconds left to make it 70-69.

Coastal missed on its final possession, and German made two more free throws for the final difference.

Coastal had five scorers in double figures, led by Olivia Melvin's 16 points. Maria Marshall added 13 points and led Coastal with nine rebounds, while Harvey finished with 12 points. Crystal Chaney and Janne Tullius each chipped in 10 points. German led all scorers with 32 points.

The Mariner men hung with the seventh-ranked NAIA men's team in country before losing 89-78.

Coastal (4-14, 2-6) had cut the lead to 50-49 in the second half, but Lee separated itself with a 23-7 run. The Mariner men would cut the lead to seven but get no closer.

P.J. Reason's 16 points led Coastal. Kentorey Johnson added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Jevan Billinger scored 10 points. Will Barnes led Lee with 23 points.
