Friday Is Last Chance to Register for Math & Science Expo
Brunswick, GA – The College of Coastal Georgia is hosting a Math & Science Expo, sponsored by Pinova, on Saturday, February 9, and the registration deadline is Friday, January 11. Middle and high school students, parents and teachers from Brantley, Camden, Charlton, Glynn, McIntosh and Wayne counties are invited to participate in activities offered by the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education and Teacher Preparation and other community partners. The program includes lunch at the Southeast Georgia Conference Center on campus.
Students can choose to participate in an activity or compete in one of the Academic Bowls. The activities run concurrently between 9:30-11:45 a.m., including teachers’ and parents’ programs.
Middle schools (grades 6-8) and high schools (grades 9-12) are invited to form four-member teams to compete in the Academic Bowls. Multiple teams per school are encouraged and one teacher can sponsor all the teams for one school. The questions will focus on math and science concepts taken from the current state standards for each grade. The organizers stress that no additional preparation is required for the competitions.
The interactive activities for students include workshops on building a pinhole camera and developing photographs; modeling clay to simulate face transplant surgery and the issues related to identity; a robotics workshop and competition; methods for estimating distance; organic synthesis of aspirin; clay construction and simulated eruption of a volcano; the properties of lenses (light and vision); and listening to the human body (pulse, blood pressure, heart and lung sounds on a simulation mannequin).
Teachers can choose one of three workshops focused on the new common core science standards in K-12 curriculum: a preview and discussion of the next-generation science standards; potential College resources for local educators to support an interdisciplinary approach to the new standards; and incorporating primatology into the curriculum in support of the new standards.
Parents will be offered the opportunity to meet College faculty and staff, learn more about the College undergraduate degree programs, and tour the campus.
A $10 fee will be charged for student participation; teachers and parents are free. The registration form and check should be returned to the College by Friday, January 11. For forms or more information, contact Joan Rozmarynoski at firstname.lastname@example.org or 912.279.5880.
