Larry Johnson Selected Adviser of the Year

Brunswick, GA – The College of Coastal Georgia Joyce Jackson Adviser of the Year for 2012-13 is Lawrence E. Johnson, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, School of Business and Public Affairs.

Professor Johnson was selected by student voting and review by the College of Coastal Georgia Advisement Committee, based on criteria established by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). As the winner, Professor Johnson will represent the College at the NACADA national conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, October 6-9, 2013.

“Larry Johnson leads one of the largest associate degree programs at the College and is lead faculty in the criminal justice/security concentration in the new Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs,” Dr. William Mounts, Dean of the School of Business and Public Affairs, observed. ”He easily has over 125 advisees every semester and I bet every one of them would attest Larry provides them with individual attention. Plus Larry is more than an advisor - he is a mentor to his students and helps them identify their own path to achieve their aspirations. Larry Johnson is an excellent example of what we all should aspire to become as advisors and mentors. I am proud to call him my colleague.”

In nominating Professor Johnson, students cited his accessibility and his passion for students to succeed:

“Mr. Johnson goes out of his way for his students. He is willing to sit down and lay out the next few years of your college and help you create a path through college education that will get you the best possible education for your career…He finds helping others as a true passion and shows it well…If he is not sure about how to steer a student in a particular direction concerning signing up for classes, he will direct his students to exactly who they need to speak with for better information…Mr. Johnson is without a doubt one of the biggest reasons I love this school. He is an extreme help with anything. If you need advising, or help with a class, he will even help students who are not in his class. He is very positive and knows this school and what needs to get done for a particular degree like the back of his hand. On top of that he is amazing to talk to!...Mr. Johnson is very helpful when it comes to scheduling classes, and he always ensures the best for his students.”
Professor Johnson received his BA in Psychology and MS in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University. He joined the faculty of Coastal Georgia in 2004.

The College will formally recognize Professor Johnson during the Honors Day Program on April 26, 2013.

The award is named in honor of former faculty member Joyce Jackson, who taught mathematics at the College from 1986 until her death in 2002. Professor Jackson was a champion of quality academic advising, earning national accolades in 1999 as a NACADA Outstanding Faculty Academic Adviser. According to her College biography:

“She was recognized for her work specifically with her academic advisees, both those assigned to her and those she worked with as a volunteer in the Advisement Center.  Jackson worked tirelessly to help students acquire the requisite skills to develop and execute educational plans that would advance their career and life objectives; and, to connect them with the available services and resources to pursue their dreams.”
