Coastal golfer notches victory

College of Coastal Georgia golfer Dylan Freeman continues to collect wins for the Mariners. The junior from Athens won his third straight tournament Tuesday, winning medalist honors at the Thomas University Invitational at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta. Freeman bested Brian Langley of University of South Carolina-Beaufort on the fourth hole of a playoff to pick up the win.

Langley led Freeman by four shots at the beginning of the round, but carded a 76 in the final round to Freeman's even-par 72 to tie the golfers at 3-under 141 for the tournament. Freeman parred the fourth playoff hole while Langley bogeyed.

It is Freeman's second win of the fall after winning Coastal Georgia Men's Fall Invitational in September. Freeman also won a spring tournament at Reinhardt University.

The Coastal men finished fourth out of 12 teams, shooting a 594 as a team. Hunter Cornelius (74), Allen Bradford (72) and Hunter Stuckey (75) contributed Coastal's scores in Tuesday's final round.

Cornelius finished tied for 13th for the tournament with a 148 while Bradford tied for 26th (155) and Stuckey tied for 39th (155).

The Mariners' fifth golfer, John Weyenberg, tied for 54th with a score of 160.

USC-Beaufort won the tournament with a team score of 586.

The Coastal women finished up play Tuesday at the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational in Rome with a fifth-place showing. Coastal carded a 652 as team, finishing behind champion University of the Cumberlands in the 17-team event.

Freshman Sarah Gilliard led the Mariner women with 152 to finish third overall. Gilliard led after Monday's first round by one shot, but carded a 78 in the final round. University of the Cumberlands golfer Liz Stephens won medalist honors with a 2-under 70 after trailing Gilliard by one shot.

Colbi Tyre contributed a 79 in the final round for the Coastal women for a 158 at the tournament. Jessica Whittaker (166) and Jaclyn Harten (176) rounded out the scoring for the Mariner women.

The Coastal women finish out its fall season Oct. 29-30 at the Lee University Fall Invitational in Cleveland, Tenn.

The Mariner men will head to Rome on Monday for the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Berry College.
