Mariners pick up first league win

College of Coastal Georgia's volleyball team picked up the first Southern States Athletic Conference win in any sport for the college over the weekend.
The Mariners defeated Brenau University 3-2 on Friday at Howard Coffin Gym for their first SSAC win and added to that total with a 3-0 home win over Truett-McConnell on Saturday.
Coastal won the first two sets of the match 25-23, 25-16, but had to go to a deciding fifth set after the Golden Tigers rallied to win the third and fourth sets 25-19, 26-24. The Mariners grabbed an early lead in the fifth set, and consecutive kills by Holly Hammer and MK White sealed the win 15-12 in the final set.
Lindsay Herman led Coastal with 17 kills and 18 digs while Kara Neisen had 12 kills and nine digs. White tallied 10 kills with Hammer contributing nine kills, 10 digs and 22 assists. Maggie Bee led the Mariners in assists with 26.
Coastal (8-9 overall, 2-1 SSAC) had a easier time Saturday against the Lady Bears as the Mariners won 25-17, 25-13, 25-19.
Coastal finished with 40 kills and 12 aces, led by White's 10 kills. Holly Hammer and Katelyn Wienbarg added nine kills.
Kaye Proctor led the Mariners with four aces. White contributed three aces, and Herman added two.
The Mariners take their first conference road trip Friday when they travel to New Orleans to play Loyola University.
Women's golf tied for first: The College of Coastal Georgia women's golf team is tied for first after one round of play at the Webber International Invitational in Lake Wales, Fla.
Playing at the Lake Wales Country Club, the Mariners carded a 324 to tie University of Tampa for the top spot. Sarah Gilliard led Coastal with a 72 while Christian Liggin contributed a 78. Colbi Tyre (86) and Jaclyn Harten (88) had the Mariners' other two scores which counted.
The two-round event wraps up today.
