Marie Dodd
Community Leader
Marie W. Dodd retired in 1995 as a member of the Board of Directors and Vice President of Ivan Allen Company.
Mrs. Dodd was one of Atlanta's influential and respected community leaders. Over more than three decades, she served outstanding community organizations such as the Atlanta Rotary Club, Atlanta History Center, American Red Cross, Metropolitan Atlanta Community Foundation, The United Way of Metro Atlanta, Emory University and Georgia State University to name a few.
Appointed by then-mayor Maynard Jackson, Mrs. Dodd served on the Corporation for the Olympic Development of Atlanta.
State-wide, and by gubanatorial appointment, she served two Terms on the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, as first woman . . . and then as first women to chair this board in 1981-82. A respected leader in the office products industry, she served on the board of directors and as chairman of the industry's international association with more than 20 thousand members from the U.S. Canada, Europe and Asia.
Mrs. Dodd received numerous awards for her leadership and contributions to the city she so loved, none more important than the highest award in Girl Scouts, the "Thanks" Badge.
A dedicated and successful fund-raiser for those organizations whose mission is important to her, Mrs. Dodd chaired two campaigns for the Northwest Georgia Girl Scout Council, totaling more than $15 million dollars. She co-chaired a $15 million dollar campaign to build the once "new" – now "old" – museum at the Atlanta History Center.
Her move to St. Simons Island simply caused her to take her skills to her "adopted" home and to become involved in this community as well. She is an active member and past president of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society and co-chaired the campaign that resulted in the new A. W. Jones Heritage Center. Mrs. Dodd is an active Rotarian and has served in every office at the club level and several at the district level.
Mrs. Dodd is past chairman of the Glynn County Airport Commission and continues to serve on the commission which is responsible for both the commercial airport in Brunswick and the general aviation airport, McKinnon, on St. Simons Island. She is past president and still an ardent member of the Cassina Garden Club.
Reared in Atlanta, Marie attended public schools in Atlanta, Georgia State University and the Atlanta College ofArt. She was married to James L. Dodd, Jr., who is deceased. She has two daughters and four grandchildren.
